DR. BALFOUR MICHAEL MORGAN MOUNT (1939-2025)

Dr. Balfour Michael Morgan Mount passed away peacefully on September 25, 2025 at the Royal Victoria Hospital Palliative Care Unit that he founded in 1975. He was eighty-six. He is survived by his wife, Linda, his four children (Christopher, Lauren, James, and Beth), his grandchildren, and many nieces, nephews, and cousins. Dr. Mount was born and raised in Ottawa, Ontario. After he graduated from Queen’s Medical School in 1963, he trained in urology and urologic cancer surgery at both the Royal Victoria Hospital in Montreal and at the Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in New York City. In 1973, after completing a study focused on the unmet needs of the dying, he travelled to St Christopher’s Hospice in London, England. This inspired him to design a similar program in the context of a larger teaching hospital, for which he coined the term Palliative Care. He is a recipient of many honours and honorary degrees, including the Orders of Quebec and Canada, as well as the first Eric M. Flanders Chair in Palliative Care Medicine. In lieu of flowers, donations in his memory to the MUHC Foundation can be made at the following link: Https://muhcf.akaraisin.com/ui/giveinmemory/p/BalfourMount
A memorial service for family, friends, and close colleagues will be held on October 12, 2025 at Mount Royal Funeral Complex. Condolences can be extended as of 12pm, with the service and reception to follow beginning at 1pm.
